Program Description
The bachelor of arts degree is designed as a co-major for future elementary school teachers majoring in elementary education who wish to have a broad background in the liberal arts with a focus on STEM areas. The courses for the major are primarily those from science, math and engineering disciplinary offerings. There are two STEM designated integrative courses that students will take at the end of the program, one integrates STEM from a science or natural world perspective and the other integrates STEM from an engineering or human-made world perspective.

Our master’s program is 13 years old with over 250 graduates who have gone on to be wonderful teachers and resources in math and science for their schools and school districts. In the program, the T means education and information technology as well as design technology. For instance, children design model buildings using ratio and proportion as well as geometric reasoning.

This advanced certificate program prepares elementary school teachers for on-site positions as school and district STEM specialists who serve as resources to their peer teachers. They will be prepared in STEM content, pedagogical alternatives, reform-based curriculum, multiple assessment methodologies and leadership skills.

Program Description
In technology teacher education, prospective teachers develop the knowledge, skills and dispositions required to teach technology education in kindergarten through 12th grade. Technology education is a comprehensive hands-on program designed to enable students in kindergarten through 12th grade to develop technological literacy. Technological literacy is the ability to develop, use, manage, understand and assess technology.

Although the primary goal of the Technology Teacher Education program is to prepare competent technology teachers, alternate career opportunities exist for graduates of the program. Many graduates have established careers in business and industry, taking advantage of their technical expertise and their liberal arts and professional education with its emphasis on human development and learning. A master’s degree is required for the New York State professional certificate as a technology teacher. Graduates of our baccalaureate program in technology teacher education have the opportunity to pursue a master’s degree in instructional technology, educational administration and supervision, special education, or other education specialties that are offered at The City University and elsewhere in the country.

Program Description
A major strength of our programs is a broad array of basic and advanced technical courses which are general in nature and taught with much hands-on experience in well-equipped facilities. Both programs may be pursued by either full-or part-time students. Travel to field locations is a requirement for some courses. Graduates of the Technology Department are employed as technology education teachers throughout most of the United States and in some foreign countries. Others have taken positions as manual arts therapists and in business fields such as management, personnel, supervision and training. Some graduates are self-employed.
